Our verdict

The Kinetic Light-Up Speaker is a single KiwiCo kit listed at $49.95 for ages 12 and up (KiwiCo’s range is 12 to 16). Kids assemble the base and build the speaker circuit with transistors, resistors and capacitors, then play music over Bluetooth while lights flash and foam balls bounce to the beat. KiwiCo notes that a USB power source is not included.

It averages 4.96 from 26 reviews on KiwiCo. Owners report builds by kids aged 10 to 14 in an afternoon or about an hour and a half, often with little adult help, and say kids keep using the speaker afterward. We found no negative reviews among those we read.

It suits a 12- to 15-year-old who likes music and wants to see how a circuit works. Skip it if you do not have a spare USB power adapter, or if your child wants a build with moving mechanical parts.
