Our verdict

Chain Reaction Workshop is a single KiwiCo kit listed at $69.95 for ages 9 and up (KiwiCo’s range is 9 to 16). It walks kids through three step-by-step chain-reaction builds, then encourages bigger, custom machines using items from around the house. A mini clapper board is included for filming runs.

It averages 4.84 from 19 reviews on KiwiCo. Parents say kids aged 9 to 11 keep rebuilding new versions, one says a child still brings it out two years later, and another notes the reactions work well once everything is set up properly.

It suits a 9- to 14-year-old who likes trial and error and has floor or table space to leave builds set up. Skip it if your child gets frustrated when a run fails; tuning each step is part of the fun.
