Our verdict

Hydraulic Boxing Bots is a Thames & Kosmos kit for ages 10 and up, listed at $49.95. Its 327 pieces build two boxing robots, Robo-Boxer and Kangaroo-Bot, that use hydraulic power to jab, uppercut, shift at the waist and swap heads. Players knock the opponent’s head back to score on the included scoreboard. Each robot has its own manual, 40 pages in total.

The kit was named to the 2023 ASTRA Play Awards, The Toy Insider’s 2023 STEM 10 list and Purdue University’s 2023 INSPIRE Engineering Gift Guide. The maker’s page had no owner reviews when we checked, so we can’t report how long the build takes or how well the hydraulics hold up.

It suits a 10- to 14-year-old who likes long builds and wants to play with a friend or sibling afterward. Skip it for younger kids; 327 pieces and hydraulic tubing take patience.
