Our verdict

Physics Workshop is a Thames & Kosmos building kit about mechanical physics. Its 305 pieces build 36 models, starting with a fixed pulley and moving up to a windmill, a two-speed crane, a force scale, a sail car, a centrifuge, a pinball game and a pendulum clock. The maker lists 37 experiments covering gears, levers, screws, inclined planes, pulleys, and wheels and axles, all explained in a 104-page full-color manual. One C battery is required. It came out in 2005, won a Parents' Choice Silver Award that year, and the Thames & Kosmos store had it at $59.95 on October 7, 2026.

We found no owner reviews to read: the Thames & Kosmos store shows none for this kit. What the maker's facts tell us is that this is a long, manual-led project rather than a quick build. Models are built one at a time from a shared set of parts, so a child takes one apart to start the next, and the 104 pages carry both the steps and the science.

It suits a patient 8 to 12 year old who likes building sets and wants to know how machines work. Skip it if your child wants a model to keep on the shelf, or if they lose interest in long instruction books; a younger child will likely need an adult reading along.
