Our verdict

The Yoto Player (3rd Generation) is Yoto's full-size card player: kids push a Yoto card into the slot to play stories, music or podcasts, and turn the knobs for chapters and volume. Yoto lists it at $109.99 for ages 3 to 12 and up, with up to 16 hours of play per charge, stereo sound, Bluetooth, a room thermometer, an ok-to-wake night light and clock, and a Make Your Own card.

Yoto stresses that the player has no microphone, camera or ads. Cards are sold separately, though Yoto includes free audio channels. A newer Yoto Player 4th Gen was listed at $149.99 as a pre-order when we checked, so the 3rd Gen is the model shipping now.

It suits families who want kids to choose their own audio without a phone or tablet. Skip it for toddlers under 3, or if you do not want to keep buying cards.
