LEGO vs Mega: Which Building System Is Better?
How LEGO, DUPLO, MEGA BLOKS, and Mattel Brick Shop compare on fit, ages, licenses, and 2026 US price per piece.
- Ages 1+
- $20–$130
- Researched
For most families in 2026, LEGO is the better system to buy into: it sells sets rated from 1½+ to 18+, its DUPLO and standard bricks connect, and every LEGO set we priced was listed as Available now on LEGO.com. Mattel’s brick lines can match LEGO on price per piece, but the MEGA collector sets on Mattel Creations were sold out when we checked, and Mattel’s current adult line, Mattel Brick Shop, starts at 10+.
Who makes LEGO and MEGA, and what can you buy today?

LEGO bricks come from The LEGO Group. In August 2026 it reported first-half revenue up 21% to DKK 41.9 billion, and its CEO pitched the range as broad.
“Our portfolio of products offers something for everyone.”
Niels B Christiansen, CEO, The LEGO Group
MEGA belongs to Mattel. On its brand portfolio page, Mattel says “MEGA offers building experiences for everyone,” and a separate Mattel page says MEGA is headquartered in Montreal. When we checked on Oct 5, 2026, Mattel’s US store listed only the toddler line, MEGA BLOKS, in its building blocks collection, and each item showed Out of Stock with a Where to buy link.
The MEGA collector sets on Mattel Creations, covering licenses like Pokémon, Halo, Hot Wheels, and Barbie, were all sold out. The newest of them was published April 29, 2025. Mattel’s current brick line for older builders is Mattel Brick Shop, which a January 2026 Mattel release calls “Mattel’s elevated building sets brand created for adult builders and collectors.” We found no Mattel page saying Brick Shop replaced MEGA, so we treat them as separate lines here.
How do LEGO and MEGA compare side by side?

Prices are US list prices from Oct 5, 2026.
| Factor | LEGO | MEGA BLOKS / Mattel brick lines |
|---|---|---|
| Maker | The LEGO Group | Mattel (MEGA is based in Montreal) |
| Toddler line | DUPLO, rated 1½+ to 3+ on LEGO.com | MEGA BLOKS First Builders, tagged 1Y+ or “Ideal for ages 1 to 5” |
| Standard-size line | LEGO sets rated 4+ to 18+ | Mattel Brick Shop, rated 10+ to 17+; MEGA collector sets sold out |
| Stock when we checked | All sets we priced: Available now | Brick Shop listed on Mattel Creations; MEGA BLOKS Out of Stock on Mattel’s US store |
| Price per piece, our sample | 6.1¢ to $1.11 | 5.9¢ to $1.32 |
| Licenses we saw for sale | Minecraft, Harry Potter, NASA, Jeep, Peanuts | Hot Wheels with real car makers, Masters of the Universe, Halo, Xbox, John Deere |
| Cross-brand fit | DUPLO and LEGO bricks connect, per LEGO | Mattel copy says compatible with “other name brands”; owners report part-level gaps |
| Figures | Minifigures (Passenger Jet 60492 includes 4) | MEGA figures; owners say LEGO accessories can strain their hands |
Bottom line: LEGO leads on range and availability today. Mattel Brick Shop competes on price per piece for teens and adults, and MEGA BLOKS competes with DUPLO when in stock.
Is brick quality and clutch different?

Stock photo of generic plastic bricks; no brand is shown.
We read owner threads and reviews for this section. Clutch, the grip between studs and tubes, is the complaint that comes up most. In an r/lego thread asking whether LEGO is really that much better than Mega Bloks, owners describe LEGO plastic as denser with steadier grip, and some say MEGA pieces were either loose or so tight they popped off. Others in the same thread say newer Halo waves had improved, and posters admit a fan bias toward LEGO.
A parent in another r/lego thread had relatives who bought both brands, and everything ended up in one bin. Replies said MEGA pieces stand out by their specialized one-use parts and different plastic, and that LEGO models tend to stay assembled. Both threads sit on a LEGO fan forum.
Mattel Brick Shop is newer and has fewer owner reports. The Brick Post’s review of the Custom ‘68 Camaro says, “The clutch power is an important aspect of any brand, and I can confirm this isn’t an issue here.”
Bottom line: Owner feedback on older MEGA sets favors LEGO’s consistency, and early Brick Shop reviews report good clutch.
Are MEGA bricks compatible with LEGO?

Stock photo of hands sorting a mixed pile of small bricks.
Standard-size MEGA and Brick Shop sets are sold as compatible with other brands, and basic bricks generally stack with LEGO. Toddler lines are a different story. Guides disagree here, so this matrix shows what each source says, with owner reports marked.
| Pairing | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| DUPLO + LEGO | Compatible. Only LEGO pieces with an even number of studs (2x2, 2x4) fit DUPLO, and LEGO bricks fit on DUPLO bricks that have hollow studs. DUPLO figures and LEGO minifigures don’t fit the other system’s bricks. | LEGO’s help page on DUPLO |
| MEGA BLOKS First Builders + DUPLO | “Mega Bloks can be stacked upon Duplo Blocks, but not vice versa.” | Tiny Workshops, 2023 |
| MEGA BLOKS + LEGO | No current Mattel statement found. A Mattel Canada page says the blocks are “compatible with all MEGA BLOKS building toys.” | Mattel product copy |
| Older MEGA collector sets + LEGO | Mattel copy says pieces “are compatible with other name brands.” MEGA’s FAQ, as quoted in 2017, said sets fit “existing standard size bricks.” | Mattel Creations; The Brick Blogger |
| Earlier MEGA Hot Wheels sets + LEGO | They “used a different system with limited Lego compatibility.” | The National, 2025 |
| Mattel Brick Shop + LEGO | Mattel copy: pieces combine “with all building sets by Mattel Brick Shop and other name brands.” The National: “standard stud geometry, allowing full compatibility with Lego pieces.” | Mattel Creations our review; The National, 2025 |
| MEGA + LEGO (owner reports) | Basic bricks mostly work; bars, hinges, pins, and figure hands are where problems show up. | r/megaconstrux owners |
The Brick Shop claim comes from The National’s 2025 review, which also reports the earlier Hot Wheels sets fit less well.
Which parts don’t fit cleanly?
In an r/megaconstrux thread asking whether LEGO is 100% compatible with Mega, owners say the trouble sits at the part level. Their reports break down like this:
- Bricks and plates: mostly fine together.
- Bars, rods, and figure weapons: LEGO’s run slightly thicker, so a LEGO weapon can stretch or crack a MEGA figure’s hand.
- Hinges and Technic pins: owners report the same thickness problem.
- Large plate-to-plate sections: some say these can warp a LEGO baseplate.
For minifigures and MEGA figures, the simple habit is keeping each figure’s gear with its own brand. On whether mixing brands is wrong at all, most owners in a separate r/megaconstrux thread say it’s fine if you watch the grip, with purists objecting only when a build is entered as an all-MEGA creation.
Bottom line: Owners say basic bricks mix well. Keep bars, pins, hinges, and figure accessories with their own brand, and avoid pressing big MEGA plate sections onto a LEGO baseplate.
DUPLO or MEGA BLOKS for a toddler?

Stock photo of a toddler building with large plastic bricks.
For Ages 0–2, the choice is LEGO DUPLO or MEGA BLOKS First Builders, and the two don’t swap freely. Tiny Workshops says MEGA BLOKS stack on DUPLO but not the other way around. DUPLO’s edge is the path forward: LEGO says DUPLO and LEGO bricks are compatible, and parents in an r/lego thread for non-LEGO families advise not skipping DUPLO because nothing is wasted when kids move up.
On price, the entry bags are even. The MEGA BLOKS First Builders Big Building Bag (80 blocks, $19.99, tagged 1Y+) and the LEGO DUPLO Colorful Creative Box (80 pieces, $19.99, LEGO rates it 1½+) both work out to 25.0¢ a piece. The MEGA BLOKS bag showed Out of Stock on Mattel’s US store, so check other retailers through its Where to buy link.
If you want one DUPLO set to start with, our pick is the LEGO DUPLO Alphabet Truck (10421). It’s $39.99 list on LEGO’s product page for the Alphabet Truck, has 36 pieces, and LEGO rates it 2+. A small vehicle set suits a 2-year-old who wants something to push around between builds. Read our notes on a DUPLO set for toddlers before you decide.
“Simple toys like blocks and puzzles offer kids a foundation for learning subjects like math and science.”
Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, professor of linguistics, cognitive science and psychology, University of Delaware
Moving up from toddler blocks to standard bricks brings small parts. The CPSC fact sheet on the Child Safety Protection Act gives the required label for toys for ages 3 to under 6 that contain small parts: “CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.” Parents in an r/daddit thread say the real signal is whether a child still mouths objects, and they keep to DUPLO with supervision until then. Follow the maker’s age and safety guidance on the box and stay close during play.
Bottom line: Both toddler lines cost about the same per piece. Pick DUPLO if you plan to move to LEGO later; pick MEGA BLOKS if you find it in stock and don’t plan to mix systems.
Which is cheaper per piece?

We divided each price by the maker’s piece count. Every LEGO set below showed Available now on LEGO.com on Oct 5, 2026. Brick Shop prices are what Mattel Creations listed that day. MEGA BLOKS prices come from Mattel’s US store listing data, where every item showed Out of Stock with a Where to buy link.

| Masters of the Universe Battle of Castle Grayskull (JMB32) | Mattel Brick Shop | $65.00 | 867 | 7.5¢ | Mattel Creations |
| Hot Wheels Custom ‘68 Camaro (JFT16) | Mattel Brick Shop | $22.00 | 289 | 7.6¢ | Mattel Creations |
| Hot Wheels Halo UNSC M12 Warthog (JNP49) | Mattel Brick Shop | $76.00 | 935 | 8.1¢ | Mattel Creations |
| Hot Wheels ‘71 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV (JHF61) our review | Mattel Brick Shop | $130.00 | 1,523 | 8.5¢ | Mattel Creations |
| First Builders Big Bag Of Blocks (JFF50) | MEGA BLOKS | $24.99 | 130 | 19.2¢ | Mattel’s US store (Out of Stock) |
| First Builders Deluxe Building Bag (CNM43) | MEGA BLOKS | $29.99 | 150 | 20.0¢ | Mattel’s US store (Out of Stock) |
| First Builders Big Building Bag, Blue (JGK05) | MEGA BLOKS | $19.99 | 80 | 25.0¢ | Mattel’s US store (Out of Stock) |
| Fisher-Price John Deere Dump Truck (DBL30) | MEGA BLOKS | $32.99 | 25 | $1.32 | Mattel’s US store (Out of Stock) |
The five Brick Shop sets ran 5.9¢ to 8.5¢ a piece, close to LEGO’s Classic boxes at 6.1¢ and 7.6¢ and below the LEGO Technic Jeep at 9.0¢. Toddler vehicle sets cost the most per piece on both sides: $1.11 for the DUPLO Alphabet Truck and $1.32 for the MEGA BLOKS John Deere Dump Truck. Price per piece is a rough tool, since a large toddler block and a tiny plate both count as one piece.
Heads up: Mattel prices vary by store. The same Brick Shop SKUs showed lower prices but Out of Stock on Mattel’s US store, so confirm price and stock before you buy.
Bottom line: For teen and adult builds, Mattel Brick Shop was a little cheaper per piece than LEGO in our sample. For toddlers the two are close, and for ages 6–9 only LEGO had sets in our sample.
What ages and licenses does each brand cover?

Stock photo of an adult hobbyist working on a model layout.
LEGO covers every age band with sets on sale. DUPLO runs 1½+ to 3+, and LEGO’s 4+ page says its 4+ sets split builds into manageable chunks, use illustrated instructions, and swap stickers for pre-printed decorations. From there, LEGO’s ratings climb through 6+, 9+, and 14+ to 18+ sets in lines like Botanicals, Architecture, and Icons, with licenses such as Minecraft, Harry Potter, NASA, Jeep, and Peanuts.
Mattel’s verified lines leave a gap in the middle. MEGA BLOKS sets are tagged 1Y+ to 3Y+, and Mattel Brick Shop starts at 10+ for its $22 Hot Wheels cars, then 13+ for Masters of the Universe and 17+ for the Halo Warthog, the Lamborghini Miura, and the Xbox set. We found no Mattel brick set rated for Ages 6–8. Mattel’s Ted Wu says the Hot Wheels line was “created to provide adult collectors and automotive enthusiasts a unique way to engage with their favorite vehicles.”
For picks sorted by age band, see our building sets for every age.
Bottom line: LEGO has the wider age range and more themes on sale. Mattel Brick Shop is aimed at older car, gaming, and Masters of the Universe fans.
Where does each brand make sense?

Stock photo of a parent and child building at a table.
A first set for a 1- or 2-year-old
Either toddler line works for stacking, and the 80-piece bags cost the same per piece. Choose DUPLO if you expect to add LEGO bricks around age 4, since LEGO says the two connect.
A 4- to 8-year-old who wants to build and play
LEGO is the practical choice, with 4+ and 6+ sets on sale, while the Mattel brick sets we found were toddler lines or rated 10+. The LEGO City Passenger Jet (60492), $29.99 list with 118 pieces and 4 minifigures, fits this age.
A Hot Wheels or car fan, 10 and up
Mattel Brick Shop fits well. The $22 Hot Wheels cars are rated 10+ and ran 7.6¢ to 8.4¢ per piece, and the larger Corvette Grand Sport came in at 5.9¢.
An adult collector watching price per piece
Compare both. Brick Shop’s sets were cheaper per piece in our sample, while LEGO offers more 18+ themes and wider availability.
A mixed bin from relatives
Keep it. Owners say basic bricks mix fine, so just keep bars, pins, and figure gear with their own brand. We keep more side-by-side toy comparisons like this one if you’re weighing other brands.
Bottom line: Buy into LEGO if you want one system that grows from toddler to adult. Pick Mattel Brick Shop for a car-loving teen or adult who wants more pieces for the money, and treat MEGA BLOKS as a fine toddler option when you can find it in stock.
