Our verdict

Codenames is a team word game from Czech Games Edition for 4 to 8 or more players, ages 10 and up. Two spymasters give one-word clues so their teams can find their agents in a 5 by 5 grid of words, while avoiding the assassin. CGE lists about 15 minutes per game. This 2025 edition has 200 cards with 400 codenames, new art, a new insert and a shorter rulebook, and sells for $24.99 on CGE's US store.

Owners on BoardGameGeek say the rules take minutes to teach and that everyone stays involved, even when it is not their turn. One reviewer with 100 plays says it works well with 6 to 8 people but sees less play with small groups. Owners of the first edition say the changes are small: refreshed art, a revised rulebook and a few new words, so they see no reason to upgrade.

It suits teens who play with friends or family in groups of four or more and want a quick game that is easy to explain. Skip it if you usually play with two or three people; CGE sells Codenames: Duet for two. Skip it too if you already own the original edition, since the word list is mostly the same.

Mixed
After 100 plays since 2015, finds it clever at linking words while dodging others, and says it plays well with 8 people and fine with 6. It now comes out less often because smaller groups pick other word games.

Positive
Learned and taught it within minutes and says players stay involved whether or not it is their turn. Notes that a few edge-case clue rules sit late in the rulebook and the bystander card art confused a new player.
BoardGameGeek review threadDec 30, 2025
Mixed
Asked about upgrading from the first edition, an owner says the differences are small: refreshed art and box, a revised rulebook and a few changed words, so they see no reason to upgrade.
