Our verdict

Wingspan is a card-driven strategy board game from Stonemaier Games for 1 to 5 players. Each player builds a set of birds across three habitats to gain food, lay eggs and draw cards, and the most points after four rounds wins. Stonemaier lists 40 to 70 minutes per game and 170 bird cards, and it won the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres. Its US store price is $55.

Owners on BoardGameGeek often praise the art and how quickly new players learn the turns. One reviewer calls it a good step into heavier engine-building games. The same complaints come up in several reviews: players mostly build on their own boards with little interaction, and some say they spend turns waiting for the right food or bird to show up. One solo player sold the game for that reason.

It suits teens who like card games or nature and are ready for a game with real choices but short rules. It also works for families, and the included Automa deck lets one person play alone. Skip it for groups that want direct conflict or a fast party game. Players who already own it may prefer an expansion.

What owners say.

  • 1 positive
  • 2 mixed

Paraphrased from public owner reviews. Each one links to where it was posted.

Mixed
Likes how the bird cards are fun to read and how the habitat rows show the engine growing, and sees it as an easy way into engine building. Finds little player interaction, and after many plays the choices start to feel alike.

Positive
Says the game is easy to explain to first-time players because actions are simple and quick, yet it holds up over many plays. Adds that the expansions deepen the strategy.

Mixed
A solo player rates it 7 out of 10. The Automa opponent is easy to run, but they often felt they were waiting for the right food, bird or dice, admired the game more than they played it, and sold their copy.
