Our verdict

The Key: Escape from Strongwall Prison is a HABA deduction game for 1 to 4 players aged 12 and up, listed at $29.99. Players study game cards for clues about escape routes, laundry carts, hiding places and gang ties, then check their answer with the game’s key-and-code system. HABA calls it the trickiest case in The Key series, and it includes a solo variant.

On HABA USA it averages 4.71 from 14 reviews, all from late 2023. Owners compare it to Clue, say families enjoy investigating the clues, and that younger kids can join on a team. Two reviewers found it confusing at first. At least one review says the game was received free to try, so read the ratings with that in mind.

It suits a 12- to 16-year-old who likes mysteries, or a family with teens. Skip it for younger kids playing on their own; the clue cards ask for close attention.
