Our verdict

Silly Speaker is a single KiwiCo kit for ages 7 and up (KiwiCo’s range is 7 to 12), listed at $29.95. Kids build a square wooden speaker around a real speaker driver and a Bluetooth receiver, then pair it with their own device. Swappable face plates and wiggle eyes give it a goofy look, and a screwdriver, wrench and USB-C cable are in the box.

There were only five reviews on KiwiCo when we checked, all five stars. Parents of a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old say the build was fun and the kids kept using the speaker, and one buyer was surprised by the sound. With so few reviews, we would not read much into the all-five-star average.

It suits a 7- to 10-year-old who likes music and wants a project that stays useful afterward. Skip it if your family has no phone or tablet for the child to pair it with.
