Our verdict

Koala Crate is KiwiCo's monthly subscription for ages 3 to 6. Each crate has a theme, hands-on toys and builds, and a storybook with Kellan and friends; examples on the page include Butterflies and Caterpillars, My Body and Me with plush organs and a real stethoscope, and Dinosaur Dig. A single crate is $30 on the monthly plan, and longer plans bring the cost down to about $24 a month, with free US shipping.

KiwiCo shows 4.7 out of 5 from 9,381 reviews for Koala Crate. Parents we read praise the quality of the materials and the monthly booklet, and say it gives busy families an easy starting point for play on days stuck inside.

It suits a preschooler who enjoys making things with a parent once a month. Skip it if you do not want a recurring charge, or if your child is under 3; KiwiCo now lists Koala Crate for 3 to 6.
