Thames & Kosmos Massive Erupting Volcano 642116

Massive Erupting Volcano is a Thames & Kosmos earth-science craft kit. Kids slide together a cardboard frame, wrap it in plaster-coated fabric strips, let it harden and paint it, then add cardboard cutouts of dinosaurs and prehistoric plants. Mixing two powders with dye and water makes a red, foaming lava flow, and six packets of chemicals allow several eruptions. The frame builds one of two volcano shapes, and the maker says the finished model is more than one foot tall. Instructions and science content come on a large 16.5 x 23.3 inch poster. The kit has 32 pieces and no batteries, and the Thames & Kosmos store had it at $34.95 on October 7, 2026.

We found no owner reviews to read: the Thames & Kosmos store shows none for this kit. From the maker's description, expect a project over several sittings, since plaster has to dry before painting. The box back carries a chemical warning that begins 'Not suitable for children under 8' and calls for adult supervision; the rest is too small to read in the maker's photo.

It suits an 8 to 12 year old who enjoys crafts as much as science and has a table that can get messy. Skip it if you want a reusable science set, since eruptions are limited to the six chemical packets, or if you have no space to let plaster dry.
