Our verdict

Magnetic Science is a 42-piece experiment kit built around magnets of several shapes and sizes, with a compass, iron filings sealed in a clear box, floating ring magnets and other parts. The 48-page full-color manual walks through 33 experiments and games: sorting magnetic from non-magnetic materials, finding poles, seeing field lines in the filings, learning why a compass points north, and building a simple electromagnet. Thames & Kosmos rates it for ages 8 and up, and it has been on sale since 2016. The store price on October 7, 2026 was $24.95.

We found no owner reviews to read: the Thames & Kosmos store shows none, and the Target listing showed no ratings. The box front carries a warning about small magnets, and Target lists a small parts choking hazard, so it is a kit to keep away from toddlers and younger siblings.

It suits an 8 to 12 year old who likes short experiments they can repeat and show off, and it works as a lower-cost add-on gift. Skip it if your child wants to build a finished model to keep, or if there is a toddler in the house who might get at loose magnets.
