Our verdict

Kiwi Crate is KiwiCo’s monthly subscription for ages 6 to 9. Each crate has a STEAM theme and includes everything needed for the build, with instructions, ideas for ways to play, and bonus challenges. KiwiCo says most crates hold either one larger project or two smaller ones; recent examples include an archery set, motorized spin art, and desktop pinball.

The $24-a-month price is the 12-month prepaid plan ($288). Month-to-month is $30 a crate, three months is $84, and six months is $156, with free US shipping for subscribers. Monthly plans can be canceled after the first crate ships. Prepaid plans can’t be canceled partway through; you can only turn off renewal. All plans renew automatically.

Parents on KiwiCo’s site and on My Subscription Addiction say kids can work through the crates mostly on their own. The complaints we read are about interest fading and the prepaid cancellation rules. If you’re not sure your child will stay interested, start with the monthly plan.
