Our verdict

This LEGO Technic set builds NASA’s Space Launch System rocket on a launch base, with 632 pieces for ages 9 and up, listed at $59.99. Turning a crank lifts the rocket, drops the side boosters, then separates the core stage and the Orion capsule in turn. LEGO says it was developed with NASA and ESA, and it includes four astronaut nanofigures.

Brickset’s reviewer liked the clever launch mechanism and the new parts, and called the gearbox a bit over-engineered. The one member review we read gives it three stars: interesting to build, but play is limited to launching and resetting, and booster stickers can peel on the curved pieces. Brickset members average 4.2 from 31 ratings.

It suits a 9- to 12-year-old who likes space and wants to see how a mechanism works. Skip it if they want a model with lots of play features; once built, it does one thing.
