Our verdict

The Vintage Steam Train is a 575-piece City set for ages 7 and up and the first minifigure-scale steam train in LEGO City, according to Brickset. LEGO lists a steam engine, coal tender and passenger car with magnetic couplings, a station platform with a canopy bench, lamppost and working semaphore signal, and 5 minifigures. The train is about 17.5 in. (45 cm) long. It does not include a motor; LEGO says it can be motorized with Powered Up parts sold separately.

We found no Brickset member reviews yet, so we relied on Brickset's review, written with a copy supplied by LEGO. The reviewer likes the compact 7-stud-wide engine, the return of metal axles on the carriage wheels, the printed parts with no stickers, and how smoothly it runs once fitted with Powered Up parts in the tender. The complaints: the set comes with 4 straight track pieces rather than a loop, the coach has no doors, and the reviewer judges it overpriced next to the two other 2026 City trains.

It suits a child or family who already owns LEGO track, or plans to add a motor, and wants an old-fashioned train for a city layout. Skip it if you want a train that runs straight out of the box, or more than one passenger car.

What owners say.

  • 1 mixed

Paraphrased from public owner reviews. Each one links to where it was posted.

Positive
Brickset's reviewer calls it an attractive, compact steam train that runs smoothly on a layout once motorized, and welcomes the metal axles and the all-printed parts. Putting the hub and motor in the tender, they note, spares the engine's drive wheels.

Mixed
The same reviewer likes the set a lot but says it is not self-contained: you need Powered Up parts and more track to get full play from it. They also think it is overpriced compared with this year's other City trains, and note the coach has no doors.
