LEGO Sets by Age: What to Buy From 18 Months to 12 Years
What LEGO's age marks mean, when to move from DUPLO, and 43 sets sorted by age from 1½+ to 10+, with prices checked in October 2026.

Match the LEGO line to the child’s hands first and the age on the box second. DUPLO covers 18 months to about 4, LEGO’s 4+ sets bridge the jump to small bricks, and themed sets of a few hundred pieces suit most 6- to 8-year-olds. From 9 to 12, kids can take on 600 to 1,400 piece builds and Technic. Below are 43 sets ToyNoble has reviewed, sorted by LEGO’s own age mark, with list prices when we checked in October 2026.
What do the ages on LEGO boxes mean?
The number on a LEGO box is the maker’s age grade, and it carries two messages at once. The Toy Association’s statement on age grading and small parts says “age grading is based largely on safety and not on how smart a child may be.” Above the toddler range, the mark also reflects how hard the build is.
US law adds a second label. The CPSC fact sheet on the Child Safety Protection Act says toys with small parts meant for children at least 3 but under 6 must carry this warning: “CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.” Every LEGO System set in this guide has small parts, while the DUPLO sets do not, per our product data.
Parents read the marks differently. In a Mumsnet thread about a 9+ set for a 4-year-old, most replies said the number mostly signals difficulty, piece count and stickers, and that building together is fine. That works for a child who no longer mouths toys. It doesn’t work when a baby or toddler shares the floor.
Bottom line: Treat the mark as a minimum. Stretch it only with an adult building alongside and no under-3s nearby.
Which LEGO suits 18 months to 2 years?
At this age, building means stacking, pulling apart and pushing things around. LEGO’s DUPLO page describes the line as for “toddlers aged 18 months and over,” with large, easy-to-handle bricks. The 1½+ sets below have no small parts in our product data. Simple shapes beat detailed models here: a box of bricks or a push-along train gets used more than a set with one fixed design.
| Set | Price | Pieces | LEGO mark | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DUPLO Brick Box (10913) | $29.99 | 65 | 1½+ | First bricks, with a lidded storage box |
| DUPLO Number Train (10954) | $19.99 | 23 | 1½+ | Toddlers starting to notice numbers |
More first toys for this stage are in our toys for ages 0 to 2.
Bottom line: One open-ended DUPLO box goes further than several themed sets at 18 months.
Which DUPLO sets fit ages 2 and 3?
Two-year-olds start building to a picture and acting out stories, so vehicles and familiar characters work well. By 3, some kids enjoy a game with rules. Parents in an r/daddit thread on starting regular LEGO kept coming back to one question: does the child still put things in their mouth? Several said fine motor skill, not interest, held their 3-year-olds back from small bricks.
| Set | Price | Pieces | LEGO mark | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DUPLO Alphabet Truck (10421) | $39.99 | 36 | 2+ | Toddlers starting letter play |
| DUPLO Fire Truck with Hose and Firefighter (10473) | $29.99 | 28 | 2+ | Two-year-olds who love fire trucks |
| DUPLO Pizza Girls with Muffin and Bluey (10469) | $39.99 | 44 | 2+ | Toddlers who already know Bluey |
| DUPLO Interactive Adventure Train (10427) | $79.99 | 57 | 2+ | Train fans; needs 4 AAA batteries, not included |
| DUPLO Animal Building Game (10472) | $49.99 | 94 | 3+ | Preschoolers who like games and building |
“Simple toys like blocks and puzzles offer kids a foundation for learning subjects like math and science.”
Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, professor of linguistics, cognitive science and psychology, University of Delaware
That quote comes from a University of Delaware report on block play about a study of 3-year-olds. It doesn’t name LEGO, but it backs the case for plain bricks at this age.
Bottom line: Pick a vehicle or character your toddler already loves, and keep DUPLO out of the bin rotation, not in the attic.
When should a child move from DUPLO to LEGO?

Most families switch between 4 and 5, but the real signals are behavior. In an r/Parenting thread on the switch, a parent described a 3-year-old who couldn’t snap small bricks together or pull them apart, and whose LEGO car kept breaking. Replies ranged from “it depends on the kid” to waiting until 5, and one parent with a 4-year-old said 4+ sets went fine with help.
Readiness checklist:
- The child no longer mouths toys or small objects.
- They can press two small bricks together and separate them alone.
- They can follow a picture for a few steps.
- No baby or toddler plays in the same space.
DUPLO doesn’t have to go. LEGO’s help page on building with LEGO and DUPLO bricks says “Only LEGO pieces with an even number of studs are compatible with DUPLO pieces,” so a 2x4 brick fits but a 1x2 doesn’t. In a 2026 r/Parenting thread, parents said their 8- and 12-year-olds still pull out DUPLO for swords, vehicles and games.
Bottom line: Move up when the hands and habits are ready, and let DUPLO stay as the big-piece layer of the collection.

LEGO’s 4+ sets page says the build “is separated into manageable chunks” and that LEGO has “replaced fiddly stickers with pre-painted decorations.” That’s what a 4-year-old needs: a model that’s finished in a short sitting and holds up to play. One parent in an r/Parenting thread about a 3-year-old who wanted big sets found the trick was to ask the child to find each piece while the adult built.
| Set | Price | Pieces | LEGO mark | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City Passenger Jet (60492) | $29.99 | 118 | 4+ | Four-year-olds moving up from DUPLO |
| Friends Animal Vet Clinic (42696) | $29.99 | 141 | 4+ | Animal lovers who like pet play |
| Star Wars Grogu’s Homestead (75443) | $19.99 | 107 | 4+ | Young Star Wars fans ready for a first set |
| City Fries Food Truck (60488) | $19.99 | 216 | 5+ | Kids 5+ who like vehicles and food-stand play |
Bottom line: A 4+ vehicle around $20 to $30 is a low-risk first step from DUPLO.
Which LEGO suits a 6-year-old?
Six-year-olds often build alone from the book for the first time, so piece counts of 190 to 320 work well. Sets with two builds, like a pair of mechs, give siblings or friends something to play with together.
| Set | Price | Pieces | LEGO mark | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City The LEGO Van (60500) | $29.99 | 276 | 6+ | City fans who like vehicles |
| Marvel Mech Battle: Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock (76338) | $29.99 | 315 | 6+ | Spider-Man fans who want to play |
| Friends Pizza Truck (42694) | $14.99 | 190 | 6+ | Kids who like cooking and serving play |
Bottom line: At 6, buy for the play after the build: a vehicle, a food truck or a pair of rivals.
Which LEGO suits ages 7 and 8?
This is where the catalog opens up. Kids 7 and 8 can follow a few hundred steps and start to care about one theme, often a game, film or show. Use price to set the scale: a $10 to $20 set for a quick win, $60 to $90 for a weekend build.
| Set | Price | Pieces | LEGO mark | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Creator 3in1 Cute Hamster with a Flower (31376) | $9.99 | 166 | 7+ | Animal fans who like rebuilding |
| Technic Yellow Motorcycle (42225) | $9.99 | 151 | 7+ | Kids curious about engines and steering |
| Harry Potter Flying Ford Anglia (76424) | $14.99 | 165 | 7+ | Young Harry Potter fans |

| City Coast Guard Helicopter (60503) | $64.99 | 551 | 7+ | Rescue-mission fans |
| Friends Liann’s Family House (42687) | $69.99 | 946 | 7+ | Dollhouse fans who like long builds |
| City Vintage Steam Train (60511) | $89.99 | 575 | 7+ | Train fans; motor sold separately |
| Harry Potter Cornish Pixie (76461) | $29.99 | 320 | 8+ | Harry Potter fans who want a display figure |
| Creator 3in1 Forest Animals: Gray Wolf (31393) | $49.99 | 657 | 8+ | Animal fans who want 3 builds in one box |
Liann’s Family House is the long build of this group at 946 pieces. Our notes suggest skipping it for a child who wants to finish in under an hour.
Bottom line: Let the child’s favorite theme pick the set, and let your budget pick the size.
Which LEGO suits ages 9 to 12?
From 9, kids can handle sets of 600 to 1,400 pieces, multi-booklet builds and stickers. Many start to care about how a model looks on a shelf, which is why display figures and Technic show up here. If your child asks how things move, our guide to choosing a first LEGO Technic set explains beams, pins and axles.

| Harry Potter Thestral Family (76458) | $69.99 | 548 | 10+ | Fans who like creatures; no minifigures |
| Minecraft The Ender Dragon (21595) | $69.99 | 710 | 10+ | Older Minecraft fans who want a shelf model |

| Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle: The Main Tower (76454) | $259.99 | 2,135 | 10+ | Fans building out the Hogwarts castle |
The Hogwarts tower stands over 26.5 in. tall and is one section of a larger castle, so measure the shelf first. The Thestral Family has a Dec 31, 2026 retirement date on Brickset, per our product notes.
Bottom line: For 9 to 12, a 600 to 1,000 piece set in their favorite theme is the sweet spot; save 2,000-piece builds for proven builders.
How do you pick between two ages or two sets?
Buy for the child in front of you, not the label. The AAP’s HealthyChildren page on what to look for in a toy says good toys are ones that “match your child’s developmental skills and abilities and encourage the development of new skills.” In practice:
- If the child is between marks, pick the lower one and a slightly bigger set.
- If they want a set marked above their age, plan to build it together.
- If younger siblings share the room, keep small-part sets on a table or tray.
- If you’re unsure about a theme, a $10 to $20 set is a cheap test.
We keep more reviews and age guides for building sets if you’re comparing brands.
Bottom line: A set that’s slightly easy and gets finished beats a set that’s too hard and gets abandoned.
